We Could’ve Talked for Hours

Let me tell you, it is impossible ask five German car enthusiasts to debate Audi versus BMW for only ten minutes. Unfortunately, that was the reality of my first ever podcast. Having 4 such knowledgeable guests is both blessing and a curse, as the 5 of could have talked forever on the subject. I knew I was in for a treat when both sides brought pages of notes to the debate. I did however run into two issues with this super engaging conversation:

1.     The conversation was so thoughtful that it made it difficult to edit

2.     The guests used too much jargon that might not be accessible to a causal audience

All of my guests were so passionate about Audi and BMW that it made it impossible to cut down their debate to such a short window of time. I even had to cut them off around thirty minutes as I was just making my job harder. What I ultimately ended up doing is just using their first nine minutes of conversation. While this may seem lazy, I intend to upload the entire final cut to my portfolio.

The issue with car enthusiasts is that we speak a foreign language that few understand. Throwing around chassis codes, the abbreviations that manufacturers use for specific models, could hard for a casual listener to understand.

Pictured, my F80 BMW M3 and guest Travis Meloche’s F83 BMW M4. The F8X platform covers         2015-2020 BMW M3’s and M4’s (whose model name split in 2015). The sedan is the F80, the wagon is the F81, the hardtop coupe is the F82, and the convertible is the F83. Courtesy of Stage 2 Media.

The jargon from chassis codes and complicated model names might be difficult to grasp, but one you familiar with the numbering system with both brands, it makes a lot of sense.

The other interesting addition to my podcast was the use of royalty-free music (that I pay for) with my Storyblocks subscription. I considered using audio of different cars’ motors and exhaust but for the sake of brevity I went with an R&B style intro which can be seen in yellow on the screenshot of Adobe Audition above.
